1. File and Pay Immediately: Taxpayers who missed the deadline should file their tax return and pay as soon as possible to prevent further accrual of interest and penalties. Even if unable to pay in full, one should pay as much as possible.
2. Utilize Online Payment Options: The IRS provides several online payment options including IRS Online Account, IRS Direct Pay, The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), and debit/credit card or digital wallet.
3. Apply for a Payment Plan: If unable to pay in full by the tax deadline, taxpayers can apply online for a payment plan, including short-term and long-term installment agreements.
4. Request Penalty Relief: If a penalty notice is received, taxpayers should carefully read the notice and follow the instructions for requesting relief. Those who have consistently filed and paid their taxes on time for the past three years may qualify for penalty relief.
5. Stay Informed and Follow Up: Taxpayers should stay informed about their payment status and follow up with the IRS for any updates or changes. This includes checking the application status for payment plans and keeping track of penalty relief requests.
