ST. PAUL (Feb. 26, 2025) — More than 20 members of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants (MNCPA) descended on the State Capitol for CPA Day at the Capitol, an annual event that connects CPAs with their elected officials to discuss issues affecting the profession, the clients CPAs serve and the businesses they represent.

MNCPA member, Jon Archer, CPA, Partner from Schlenner Wenner & Co., was one of the attendees who met with their representatives, sharing their valuable insights on industry topics that directly impact Minnesotans.

This year’s event felt particularly exciting in light of the strides being made in the Minnesota Legislature regarding additional pathways to CPA licensure and automatic mobility. Bills supporting this initiative were introduced in the House and Senate in the past two weeks. The recent invigoration of legislation came about through the years-long advocacy and committed dedication of MNCPA members sharing their knowledge and their stories.

“It’s powerful for legislators to hear directly from CPAs,” said Geno Fragnito, MNCPA director of government relations. “Not only are CPAs subject-matter experts, but they also provide a window into the experiences of the clients and businesses they serve. Grounding complex tax topics in the daily lives of people they serve has a significant legislative impact.”

Minnesota State Auditor Julie Blaha kicked off the event with members, highlighting the important work CPAs do.

“We are working with a shortage across the board when it comes to accounting, so my office is highly supportive of the pathways legislation,” Blaha said. “This initiative will help us across the state.”

Other key topics discussed included opposing a tax on professional services and encouraging legislation clarifying who is bound by Tax Court decisions.

The MNCPA serves the public interest by advancing the highest standards of ethics and practices within the CPA profession. The MNCPA delivers on that promise by offering extensive continuing professional education and resources; advocating for members and the public with regulatory agencies and boards; and mentoring and encouraging the CPAs and business leaders of tomorrow. Founded in 1904, the MNCPA has 7,500 members who work in public accounting, business and industry, government and education.
