Recent New and Updated Local Sales and Use Tax in Minnesota
ARTICLE | February 19, 2025
Authored by Schlenner Wenner & Co
Sales and use tax in Minnesota is a type of tax imposed on the sale of tangible personal property and certain services. The tax is collected by the seller from the consumer at the point of sale. Any business that sells taxable goods or services in Minnesota must register with the Minnesota Department of Revenue and collect the sales tax. This includes businesses located outside of Minnesota that have a physical presence or regularly solicit sales in the state. It is the responsibility of these businesses to ensure that the tax is accurately collected and remitted to the state.
Several changes and updates have recently taken place in Minnesota:
Jan 1, 2025 for Chippewa County, Grand Rapids, Lanesboro, and Watonwan County.
Effective April 1, 2025 for Blackduck, Chanhassen, Detroit Lakes, Dilworth, Henderson, Hibbing, Jackson County, Monticello, Richfield, Stearns County, Stillwater, Winona County and Woodbury.
