Taxpayers tricked by scams face penalties and delays in refunds

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently issued an alert to taxpayers following a series of tax scams and misleading social media advice that led to inflated refund claims during the past tax season. The IRS warned about scams related to the Fuel Tax Credit, the Sick and Family Leave Credit, and household employment taxes, urging taxpayers to steer clear of these traps.
The agency has witnessed thousands of dubious claims where taxpayers appear to be claiming credits for which they are not eligible. This situation has resulted in delayed refunds and the need for taxpayers to prove they have genuine documentation to support these claims.
Taxpayers who were misled into these traps need to verify their eligibility for the claims. It was also mentioned that taxpayers could face severe financial penalties, potential follow-up audits, or even criminal action for improper claims.
